A benefit for Ralston Bowles
Grand Rapids-based singer-songwriter Ralston Bowles is resting at the Lacks Cancer Center after surgery June 1, while a flurry of music-lovers are putting together an event that will help with his medical bills.
Bowles has been singing, producing concerts and nurturing musicians for many years. His own music career has enjoyed a resurgence recently. He signed with Judy Collins' Wildflower music label, and he has toured a couple times in Europe, most recently with American blues guitarist Walter Trout.
Bowles also is the host of the Tuesday Evening Music Club at Meijer Gardens in August, a popular annual concert series that spotlights local and regional artists.
He was just coming off the European tour and a well-received show at Frederik Meijer Gardens when he started feeling pains in his lower abdomen. Doctors detected colon cancer and operated soon after.
Like most musicians, health insurance coverage is not abundant, so Ralston's fans and friends are planning a couple fundraisers.
